Some of the Past Manzarek/Krieger
Manzarek & Robby Krieger
of The Doors
Rest in Peace
It was my biggest honor to have sung and toured with Ray Manzarek
and Robby Krieger of The Doors for close to three years and to
have been the last singer for that project. Being chosen to sing
on stage by these two hall of fame legends is something that
seems out of a story book to me. Considering that for over twenty
years I had toured with my own show "Wild Child," that
featured the music of the Doors.
Seeing the delighted faces of Doors fans in the audience all
over the world gave me a new insight on how important that band
really was and how far they reached.
The memories of touring with Ray and Robby are precious and
remarkable. Not just doing the shows but traveling on busses,
going through airport terminals, golf with Robby, Jet flights,
day off excursions and even down time waiting was unforgettable.
In these down times, Ray would sometimes do amusing things to
keep everyone from boredom and monotony. He was the captain of
the ship and took on that responsibility. Although he always
made important decisions with Robby.
Ray and Robby had always supported my career with Wild Child.
Ray introduced me to a sold out crowd at my very first show at
The Whisky in 1986. Very good memories and very good times. Robby
had also sat in with the band on many occasions.
Before his passing, Ray Manzarek was so much more than a Rock
and Roll Hall of Famer resting on his laurels. He was still getting
out there and entertaining the fans, giving his last energies
to those who wanted to listen. That was important to him. It
was very hard work and it may have taken its toll. Ray and Robby
have a huge following around the world. Ray didn't see his legacy
as something in the past but something he could still share.
He was still in the saddle and firing when he was stuck down,
a stand up and say what you think kind of guy, who did not pull
Ray re-invented the way keyboards were used in Rock. There has
been no one before or no one since that has pushed those limits
of what a keyboard player could do in a band.
Robby Krieger should not only be known as the guitar player
from The Doors but also wrote many of the bands biggest hits.
Including Light My Fire", Not only the Doors biggest hit
but maybe the biggest American Rock song ever recorded? This
by the way was the first song he ever wrote! He is still hard
at work with a new Jazz band and touring. We still play together
from time to time.
Touring with and the friendship of Ray and Robby is something
I will never forget.
